High society delighted in fur stoles and they have seen a revival in vintage clothing as well as glamorous winter weddings.
This particular light brown mink stole was top of the line in its day.
Denholm & McKay Co. was a department store located in Worcester, Massachusetts. The store was a dominant retailer in Central Massachusetts. The company was founded by William Alexander Denholm in 1870 on the corner of Main and Mechanic street in Worcester. He partnered with Bostonian William C. McKay, which proved to be very successful.
In twelve years Denholm and McKay had grown into a retailing giant. That year, the company moved into a new huge quarters specially built for them. Denholm's held a reputation as the biggest store of its kind in New England outside Boston and Providence, Rhode Island. In 1954 the old victorian style facade from 1882 was replaced with a new ultra-modern one. The business closed after 102 years.
This is called a Pastel, natural medium brown mink. All of this means that it is not dyed and it is a thick, luscious fur. It is commonly referred to as Autumn Haze.
The lining is a taupe satin. The lining is lovely. There are no holes, tears or stains. (One can see the marks from the sales tag just under the label, but it is not damaged.) This has been crafted by stylists. They molded the shoulder so that it stays on the person more easily. There are no initials.
There are no odors. It has been stored with a furrier each year. This is a quality fur.
The ends are 8.5" wide. In the back, from the collar seam to the bottom of the stole, it measures 18.5" The two front pockets are 5.5" long. From the collar seam, across the shoulder to the bottom side is 17". (This is like measuring a sleeve.)
The collar is 4" at its deepest. It is lined with satin as well. "Armhole to armhole" is about 22" This really means that when it is being worn, the measurement across the back is about 22" at the mid level.
This appears to be a medium size. It would probably fit from a size 6 to a size 14. Please read the measurements. We are not experts at sizing. Having said that, stoles are the one item of clothing in which size is not as important.
This stole is in excellent condition. It is clean, soft and supple. There are no tears, wear spots or stains. Although we wish to sell, we prefer to have loyal, satisfied, repeat customers. We do this by fully describing every flaw that we see. You may buy with confidence.
